Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, longtime Penn State team doctor and respected sports medicine leader, died on May 4, 2026, at age 68.

Penn State athletes, coaches, colleagues, and families remembered Sebastianelli for more than 30 years of dedicated care, steady guidance, and deep commitment to student-athlete well-being.

Sebastianelli served as director of athletic medicine, later supported the football program’s medical staff, and worked with coaches including Joe Paterno, Bill O’Brien, James Franklin, and Matt Campbell.

Sebastianelli also served as associate chief medical officer for Penn State Health’s Centre County region, professor of orthopaedic surgery at Penn State College of Medicine, and chief of staff at Mount Nittany Medical Center for 16 years.
